  72. for Microsoft(R) Windows(tm) 3.1, 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups

  94. FM StepUp makes the File Manager an actually user friendly
  95. application. With FM StepUp installed into your system you will
  96. perform various file management operations easier and faster.
  97.  
  98. FM StepUp enhances standard dialog boxes of the File Manager,
  99. providing them with additional useful features (history lists,
  100. remembering you previous commands; 'verify' check boxes; 'browse'
  101. buttons; etc.).

  103. FM StepUp allows you to combine most frequently used commands of
  104. the File Manager into the Quick Menu, so you can access them just
  105. clicking the right button of your mouse.

  107. FM StepUp makes your able to easily create, view, edit, or print
  108. arbitrary files, not necessarily associated with an application,
  109. and you can assign your favorite viewer or editor to do this.

  111. FM StepUp provides you with some unique or hard-to-find commands,
  112. allowing you, for example, to figure out the total size of a
  113. directory, including all its subdirectories; change date or time
  114. of the file; run the default screen saver whenever you want it to;
  115. etc.

  117. FM StepUp allows you to add your own commands to the File Manager
  118. and easily execute them. You may use this possibility to launch
  119. frequently used applications (as Control Panel or Clipboard viewer)
  120. directly from File Manager menu, or to perform preprogrammed
  121. operations over files selected in a File Manager's window (like
  122. UnZip or UnArj).

  124. If you are a network administrator, FM StepUp can help you to
  125. restrict some of the File Manager's capabilities (in almost the
  126. same way as you do it for the Program Manager), allowing you to
  127. prevent your users from performing potentially dangerous or
  128. undesirable commands.

  130. After all, FM StepUp is highly customizable. You are in charge of
  131. almost every aspect of its functionality - from the size of the
  132. history lists to contents of the Quick Menu and Execute Menu.

  139. 1.2. What's new in version 2.5

  142. After FM StepUp ver.2.0 :

  144. 1) New SETUP utility - you can activate/deactivate FM StepUp
  145.    whenever you wish; you can quicly take a look at the software
  146.    without actually installing it onto hard or network disk; etc.
  147.  
  148. 2) New special command added: Run DOS Program, allowing you to
  149.    easily exit Windows, run a specified DOS program, and then
  150.    restart Windows (so that you can now run DOOM 'from' Windows).
  151.  
  152. 3) Minor improvements: Centered Alingment for the Quick Menu can
  153.    be turned on/off; The About screen on start up can be turned
  154.    off for registered copies; etc.
  155.  
  156. 4) some changes to documentation made and
  157.  
  158. 5) some bugs fixed:
  159.    - View File and Edit File menu items are grayed unpredictably;
  160.    - empty disk lists in Copy Disk dialog box for systems with one
  161.      floppy drive;
  162.    - GPF when changing menu name StepUp;
  163.    - wrong behavior of the Cancel button in the Make System Disk
  164.      dialog box for systems with only one floppy drive;
  165.    - GPF when attempting to Delete an empty directory;
  166.    - improper saving of the FM StepUp settings when Windows shuts
  167.      down;
  168.    - improper Printing of large files or large number of files;

  170. If you have registered any previous version of the FM StepUp, you
  171. can upgrade to the ver.2.5 FREE. To register your copy of the FM
  172. StepUp you can use the same Registration Number as you used for
  173. ver.2.0.

  175. In comparison with FM StepUp ver. 1.x:

  196. not like it by any reason, you should definitely try this one.

  199. the FM StepUp ver.1.x because of the conflict between FM StepUp
  200. and Toolbar, please take a look at the current version. That bug
  201. has been fixed and they (FM StepUp and toolbar) enjoy each the
  202. other now.

  204. 1.3 How to use the documentation

  207. The complete information on the FM StepUp software, including the
  208. description of the installation procedure, how to get updates, how
  209. to register your copy, troubleshooting hints, order forms, answers
  210. to frequently asked questions, etc., is available in the Windows
  211. Help format, file FMSTEPUP.HLP.

  213. If you have already installed FM StepUp you can access the
  214. information by choosing StepUp | Help from File Manager's menu.
  215.  
  216. Or, double click the 'FM StepUp Help' icon in the FMStepUp group
  217. created for Program Manager after automatic installation.
  218.  
  219. Or, choose command 'Run' from Program Manager or File Manager main
  220. menu, and enter the full name (including complete path) of the
  221. FMSTEPUP.HLP file. For example, if you have placed the FM StepUp
  222. files into directory TEMP on your hard disk C, enter the following
  223. string into the 'Run' dialog box:

  227. and click OK button.

  229. Yet another way to view the file is open the directory window
  230. with the File Manager and double click filename FMSTEPUP.HLP with

  303. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a
  304. stand-alone program: there is no special executable file you would
  305. run to start the FM StepUp. To use the FM StepUp software, all you
  306. need is properly install it, and it will run automatically every
  307. time you run the File Manager.
  308.  
  309. 2.1. Using Setup utility
  310. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  311. FM StepUp v.2.5 comes with convenient and flexible SETUP utility,
  312. you can use it if you want to temporarily activate/deactivate the
  313. software or install it onto your hard or network disk for
  314. permament use.
  315.  
  316. 2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE
  317. ------------------------------------------
  318.  
  319. If you obtained FM StepUp software on a diskette or CD-ROM and
  320. want to take a look at the FM StepUp without installing it onto
  321. your hard disk, run SETUP.EXE from the FMSTEPUP directory on the
  322. diskette or CD-ROM and choose button 'Activate' when prompted.
  323.  
  324.   - to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program
  325.     Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box:
  326.  
  327.         A:\FMSTEPUP\SETUP.EXE
  328.  
  329.     (assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy
  330.     drive)
  331.  
  332. After that run File Manager: there should appear a new item in its
  333. main menu: StepUp (if there is no such an item, the FM StepUp has
  334. not been activated; see below in this file for possible reasons)
  335. Of course, be sure that the diskette or CD with FM StepUp is
  336. available during the loading of the File Manager!
  337.  
  338. Try this:
  339.  
  340. - place mouse cursor in the File Manager window and click with the
  341.   right button. The Quick Menu should pop up with a number of
  342.   choices; try some of them.
  343.  
  344. - open StepUp submenu and choose Special; try commands from it;
  345.  
  346. - open standard dialog boxes of the File Manager: Run, Copy, Move,
  347.   etc. Do they look better with 3D effects? Are the history lists
  348.   next to the editable fields handy?
  349.  
  350. - choose StepUp | Preferences: what do you want to customize? Try
  351.   buttons: Dialogs; Quick Menu; Execute Menu; try to change the
  352.   menu name 'StepUp' to something else.
  353.  
  354. Now, if you see that FM StepUp is not what you need, run SETUP.EXE
  355. and choose 'Deactivate' button. In addition, to completely clean
  356. your system up, you should delete the FMSTEPUP.INI file from your
  357. WINDOWS directory.
  358.  
  359. Otherwise, if you want to give the program more long try and wish
  360. to install it onto your hard or network disk, you can choose
  361. button 'Install' when SETUP.EXE prompts you. Please see the next
  362. section of this file for more information.
  363.  
  364. 2.1.2. Installing on a hard or network disk
  365. -------------------------------------------
  366.  
  367. If you have already placed all the files from the FM StepUp
  368. package on your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the
  369. files from an archive), you can just run SETUP.EXE and choose
  370. button 'Activate'.
  371.  
  372. If you don't have the FM StepUp files on the hard disk, choose
  373. 'Install' button instead and then enter the path to directory
  374. where you want the FM StepUp be installed. In this case SETUP.EXE
  375. will copy all the files to new location and then activate them. In
  376. addition, you will be prompted to create a separate program group
  377. for FM StepUp. It's not essential to have such a group, but it can
  378. be convenient. Anyway, the last word is yours!
  379.  
  380. 2.1.3. Uninstalling FM StepUp
  381. -----------------------------
  382.  
  383. To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM StepUp, you can
  384. run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Deactivate' button. If you decide to
  385. start using FM StepUp later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose
  386. 'Activate'.
  387.  
  388. Otherwise, to completely remove FM StepUp from your system,
  389. deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove
  390. all the files from directory on your hard or network disk where
  391. you have installed FM StepUp. In addition, erase file FMSTEPUP.INI
  392. from your WINDOWS directory, and delete program group 'FMStepUp'
  393. from your Program Manager, if your created it during installation.
  394.  
  395. 2.2. Registering your copy of the FM StepUp
  396. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  397. The first time you run FM StepUp, it displayes a registration
  398. reminder, and the About FM StepUp screen reads 'Unregistered
  399. copy'. If you have registered FM StepUp and obtained your personal
  400. Registration Number from us, you may use it to remove the
  401. registration reminder from the screen and put your name in the
  402. About FM StepUp screen: choose Preferences from the StepUp menu of
  403. File Manager and when a dialog box pops up, click the Register
  404. button. Now enter your name (exactly as it appears in your
  405. Registration acknowledgment) and the Registration number.
  406.  
  407. Be sure to enter your name EXACTLY as it's written in the
  408. Registration Acknowledgment, including all the spaces, punctuation,
  409. and entering letters in proper case (upper or lower). If you wish
  410. your name to be spelled differently please let us know and we
  411. assign you a new registraion number.
  412.  
  413. 2.3. Manual installation/deinstallation
  414. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  415. If the automatic installation fails by any reason, you can install
  416. the FM StepUp manually:
  417.  
  418. 1. Create a directory on a hard disk for FM StepUp, say
  419.    C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp
  420.    installation disk into that directory. If you obtained the FM
  421.    StepUp files compressed in an archive, extract all the files
  422.    from it.
  423.  
  424. 2. Close File Manager.
  425.  
  426. 3. Copy the file CTL3D.DLL into the Windows SYSTEM directory on
  427.    your hard drive (be sure not to overwrite the newer version of
  428.    this file if you have already got one!). If you are using a
  429.    networked Windows installation and the SYSTEM directory is
  430.    write-protected, put the file CTL3D.DLL into the WINDOWS
  431.    directory.
  432.  
  433. 4. Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
  434.    text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS directory on
  435.    your hard disk (or directory you specified when installing
  436.    Windows). Please note: the file you need is WINFILE.INI, not
  437.    WIN.INI.
  438.  
  439.    Find the section [AddOns] in this file and place the following
  440.    string right after the string [AddOns]:
  441.  
  442.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  443.  
  444.    (or specify the directory you copied the FM StepUp's files in,
  445.    if other than FMSTEPUP).
  446.  
  447.    The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like
  448.    this:
  449.  
  450.         ...
  451.         [AddOns]
  452.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  453.         ...
  454.  
  455.    (... means other lines of the file). Save the file.
  456.  
  457. 5. Run File Manager.
  458.  
  459. You shell find new menu item, StepUp, among the other items of the
  460. File Manager's main menu, if the installation has been completed
  461. successfully. If you cannot see the StepUp item in the main menu
  462. of the File Manager, an error has occurred. Please verify that you
  463. have done all the steps above, and, particularly, specified
  464. correct path in the [AddOns] section of the WINFILE.INI file. Make
  465. sure also that the files have not been corrupted when copying them
  466. onto your hard disk (do they have the same sizes as the files on
  467. the installation diskette?)
  468.  
  469. To manually uninstall FM STEPUP:
  470.  
  471. 1. Close File Manger and remove string 'FM StepUp=...' from
  472.    WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example). After that you
  473.    can restart File Manager: FM StepUp will not be loaded.
  474.    If you decide later to start using FM StepUp again, place the
  475.    string 'FM StepUp=...' specifying complete DOS path to
  476.    FMSTEPUP.DLL file, in the [AddOn] section of the WINFILE.INI
  477.    file.
  478.  
  479. There following steps should be completed only if you wish to
  480. remove the FM StepUp from your system permanently:
  481.  
  482. 2. Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where
  483.    you installed FM StepUp in;
  484.  
  485. 3. Delete file FMSTEPUP.INI from the WINDOWS directory;
  486.  
  487. 4. Delete program group 'FMStepUp' in the Program manager window,
  488.    if there is one.
  489.  
  490. We hope you'll change your mind!
